Mother and Father were right – everyone’s terrified of me! Vlad thought. I’ve got to get out of here before they do something awful.

“It’ll be all right, Vlad!” Minxie shouted. “I’ll explain!”

But Vlad wasn’t going to hang around. He turned and zoomed out of the school hall and into the playground. Tears streamed down his tiny bat face as he realized he would never see Minxie or any of his human friends ever again.

Boz had got what he wanted. He had ruined everything.

Poor Vlad wept as he flew. His worst nightmare had come true.

I’ll have to spend the rest of my days at Misery Manor now, learning stupid vampire skills which are no good to anyone. I’ll be lonely and miserable forever! he thought.

All he wanted to do was to change back into his vampire form, go to his room and flop into his coffin with the bedcovers pulled over his head. How would he be able to explain to Flit what had happened? The little bat had told him to be careful from the very first day he set foot in the human school. Would Vlad and his family even be safe at Misery Manor now that the whole school knew? Would Mrs Viola bring those people from the government that Minxie had talked about? Would he and his family be taken away somewhere?

Vlad realized he knew very little about the human world. He felt stupid for not finding out the reasons why humans and vampires didn’t mix.

I should have been more careful, he thought. But how did Boz work it out?

Vlad landed with a BUMP under the yew tree, back in vampire form. He ran to the front door of Misery Manor.

At least I’m safe for now, he thought. Boz won’t bring anyone here because he’s too frightened of Mulch.

However, as soon as he walked in through the door of Misery Manor Vlad felt that he was not safe at all. The atmosphere was very wrong. The hall was always cold and draughty, but this afternoon the air in the vast room had an icy chill. And it was darker than normal. It was as though the house itself were hiding from something, frozen with fear.

What is it? Vlad thought.

He wrapped his cape tightly around himself and tiptoed to the bottom of the stairs, using his night-vision to help him in the gloom.

No one from school – or even the government – could have got here that fast – could they?

Vlad winced as he stepped on a loose floorboard and a loud creak echoed off the dark walls.

I shall have to tread very, very carefully so as not to wake Mother and Father, he thought. He took two more steps. Then:

“SO!”

Vlad gasped, looking up sharply.

Mortemia was standing on the stairs, her hands on her hips. She was glaring down at Vlad, her bloodshot eyes wide, her mouth a tight line of displeasure.

“This is what you get up to when you are supposed to be in your coffin?” she said.
